How a mining claim works
Five steps stand between finding gold and legally holding the ground it sits in.
-
Discover
Find a valuable mineral deposit on open federal land that isn’t already claimed or withdrawn.
-
Locate & stake
Mark the claim boundaries on the ground and post a location notice, per your state’s rules.
-
Record with the county
File your location notice with the county recorder where the claim sits, within the state’s deadline.
-
File with BLM
Submit the claim paperwork and fees to the Bureau of Land Management to put it on federal record.
-
Maintain annually
Pay maintenance fees or file the small-miner waiver and assessment work each year — miss it and the claim is gone.
Gold Monster turns this into a guided checklist with the right forms for your state.
Guided claim workflows cover US federal filings and ten states today — Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, Montana, California, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and Washington — with more rolling out.
